What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are an incredible solution for patients with missing teeth. Unlike bridges or dentures, implants utilize the natural anatomy of your jawbone to ensure the prosthetic is effectively secured into place. The implant is composed of three parts, each serving a valuable function in the role of replacing the function and appearance of a natural tooth. The pieces include an implant post, an abutment, and a custom-made dental crown.

The Implant Process

The process of having an implant placed, healed, and restored in Beaufort, NC is different for everyone. Just as the natural anatomy and condition of every smile is unique, the steps of the procedure tend to vary as well. In most cases, the process from beginning to end follows the below sequence:

The process starts the same for everyone! Before prepping for surgery, you will need to call our office and schedule your FREE consultation. During this consultation, we will tell you more about implants, answer any of your questions, and determine your candidacy. At this time, we will conduct a thorough examination of your gum tissue and remaining teeth. We will also take an x-ray to ensure we get the full picture of your oral health condition.

If we detect the presence of gum disease, bone loss in the jaw, or damage to the remaining teeth, we will first request that these issues be resolved before placing implants. This will ensure that your oral health is in its best condition, increasing the likelihood of a successful surgery and complete healing.

As soon as we determine that your mouth is healthy enough for surgery, we will plan for implant placement. Before we begin, we will administer anesthesia to ensure the process is comfortable for you. A small incision will be made in the gum tissue above the selected spot for the implant to be placed. The implant post will be embedded into the jawbone and the site will be sutured closed for healing.

Throughout a period of three to six months, the implant post will become fused to the surrounding bone tissue. This will make the full restoration more secure and capable of functioning like a natural tooth. Once the healing process is complete, we will schedule for the implant to be restored.

During this last step, we will check the implant post to ensure it has healed adequately. Upon confirmation of this, we will connect an abutment to the post; an abutment acts as a connecting piece between the post and the crown. Your custom-made dental crown will then be cemented onto the abutment, finalizing your brand new restored smile.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants offer many benefits; one of the more notable advantages that truly makes implants the ideal choice is the positive impact on your oral health. Once you lose a tooth, your jawbone will begin to deteriorate due to the lack of stimulation in that area. This causes altered facial features, sagging skin, premature wrinkles, and may cause other teeth to lose stability. By placing an implant, your jawbone continues receiving healthy stimulation and remains in great shape! Other benefits include:

Durable Design

Easy Maintenance

Beautiful New Smile

The Cost of Dental Implants

As mentioned previously, this procedure is different for everyone due to the numerous factors involved in restoring each unique smile. These factors include the number of teeth missing, the existence of current conditions or issues, and the style of implant chosen. To determine accurate pricing for your procedure, we invite you to schedule your free consultation!
